How Leaders Can Champion Customer Service Week 2026

Customer Service Week runs October 5th through 9th, and this year's theme, The Extra Mile, asks a simple question: what are we willing to do beyond what's expected?

Here's the truth every leader needs to hear. Your team will rarely go further for customers than you go for them. The extra mile is a culture, and culture starts at the top.

Start by Serving Your Team

Frontline employees can only give what they have. If they feel overlooked, overworked, or unheard, "delight the customer" becomes an empty slogan. So take the first mile for your people. Thank them specifically, not generically. Instead of "great job this quarter," try "I heard how you stayed on the phone with that customer until her issue was fully resolved. That's exactly who we want to be."

Get Back on the Front Line

There's no substitute for firsthand experience. This week, spend an hour answering calls, working the chat queue, or standing at the counter. You'll learn more about your customers' frustrations in sixty minutes than in a month of dashboards. You'll also send a powerful message: no job here is beneath anyone.

Remove the Roadblocks

Often the biggest obstacle to going the extra mile is the company's own red tape. Ask your team, "What rule, process, or approval step keeps you from solving problems for customers?" Then fix at least one of them this week. Empower people to make decisions on the spot, such as a refund, a replacement, or a goodwill gesture, without chasing three signatures. Trust is what makes extra effort possible.

Make the Extra Mile Visible

What gets recognized gets repeated. Start a "Mile Marker" board or a daily shout-out in your team meeting where people share moments when someone went above and beyond. Customer stories are the best fuel for morale, so read compliments aloud, share them company-wide, and let employees see the real impact of their work.

Connect with Customers Directly

Don't wait for a complaint to reach your desk. Pick up the phone and call a few customers this week, just to say thank you and ask how you're doing. Send a handwritten note. Follow up on a recent issue to make sure it was truly resolved. These small, unexpected gestures are what customers remember long after the transaction is over.

Listen, Then Act

Invite honest feedback from both customers and employees, and promise to act on it. Nothing builds credibility faster than saying, "You told us this was a problem, and here's what we changed."

Keep Going After the Week Ends

Customer Service Week is a great spark, but the real test is what happens on October 12th. Choose one commitment to carry forward, whether that's a monthly front-line shift, a weekly recognition ritual, or a standing meeting to clear roadblocks.

The Boost

Going the extra mile isn't about grand gestures. It's about a thousand small choices to care a little more, listen a little longer, and do a little better. As a leader, you set the tempo. Lace up, lead the way, and bring your team along.

Happy Customer Service Week!
